Weekend Match Report

Mid Somerset 0 Ashmoor 5
Ashmoor went into their final match before the Christmas break having suffered their first defeat of the season at Exeter University the previous weekend. Going into their next match, Ashmoor were lucky to remain at the top of South Division 2, largely thanks to Mid Somerset who dished out a 2 – 1 defeat to high flying Bridgewater. This made Ashmoor’s trip to face Mid Somerset an even tougher proposition, but one which the young Ashmoor side were determined to get a result out of. Due to illness, 14 year old UK Lions keeper Jordan Teague was promoted from the third team to make his first team debut and it was a day to remember for the young Ashburton schoolboy. Also promoted after good displays in the second team was striker Adam Wakefield and he also could not have hoped for a better day!
Ashmoor had beaten Mid Somerset on the opening day of the league season, but travelling to Wells was always going to be a much tougher proposition. The home side were very competitive from the first whistle but Ashmoor matched them in determination and work rate. Midway through the half the game started to open up more and from a good interchange between Daw and Liam Wakefield, the latter was put through on goal and rifled his effort into the roof of the net to give Ashmoor the lead at the break. Ashmoor made some tactical readjustments at the interval, and as has been the case all season came out with all guns blazing after the break.
Immediately after the interval a flowing team move from end to end gave Lewis Hammett the ball on the edge of the shooting circle, and his quick reverse stick shot was too good for the Mids keeper and gave Ashmoor a 2 – 0 lead. The game continued to be played at a fast pace, but Ashmoor to gained more control as the half progressed. They continued to concentrate on their excellent passing game and maintained their high workrate by rotating the forwards and midfield which has been evident in all their league matches to date. Midway through the second half Adam Wakefield scored his first and Ashmoor’s third goal, and not long after flicked a high shot to give the keeper no chance. Teague in the Ashmoor goal was confident in dealing with anything thrown at him, and even when the Somerset side looked certain to score from an open play shot, he pulled off a save and cleared the ball before they could pick up the rebound.
Ashmoor were not finished there, and with five minutes remaining, Adam Wakefield made it a memorable day with an early Xmas present of a hat trick goal. It was an excellent all round team performance with everyone playing their part. It made it 10 wins out of 12 for Ashmoor, and puts them in top spot in South Division 2 at the mid season interval. This Saturday the club host a Christmas Tournament at their Isca College pitch for all Club players from 10 – 12 noon. On 3rd January there are also two New Years celebration games, when the First XI take on an Exiles XI comprising Ashmoor players who have left for University etc, followed by a Chairman’s XI V Treasurer’s XI Friendly Mixed match. Anyone who would like to play in either game should contact their Captain, or phone Steve Dinnie on 01626-824847.

ASHMOOR U16 boys reach National Indoor Finals West U16 Boys Indoor Tournament

Ashmoor went into this tournament as Devon Champions eager to take on the best in the West in order to qualify for the National Indoor Finals. First group game was Taunton School whom they dismissed 4-2 with goals from Jon Wright and Jake Crosby with 3 deadly penalty corners. Next up were Clayesmore School from Dorset, 4 – 0 goals from Wright, Crosby, Adam Wakefield and Jamie Parkinson. Bishops Wordsworth School were next to step into the firing line, losing 6 – 0 , here Ashmoor were able to show the depth of their squad with 6 different goal scorers in Crosby, Wakefield, Parkinson, Dec Turner, Tom Oxton and Sam Daymond. Then to the semi final, and all that went before counted for nothing as this was the game to win, the opposition were Canford School, Dorset , last years winners and National Finalists. Ashmoor piled on the pressure from the start, forcing the Canford keeper to make a number of saves, but just before half time, from a hit outside the D, Daymond found Parkinson in space and he drilled the ball home low into the corner. The 2nd half was a tense affair but Ashmoor coaches Sue Hutchings and Steve Dinnie had done their homework on Canford, and the boys stopped everything they tried, GK Harry Gibson was outstanding between the posts and the final score of 1-0 was enough to put the boys into the final against Millfield, but more importantly a place amongst the top 10 teams in the country at the National Indoor Finals in Birmingham next month. The final against Millfield was another close affair. Ashmoor took the lead after only 13 seconds via Wakefield. Millfield equalised with a deflection, and then came the defining moment of the game. After another flowing move from the Ashmoor boys, midfield maestro and player of the tournament, Jamie Parkinson fired home a shot from the top of the circle. Both teams, coaches and spectators applauded what was a superb goal but the umpire deemed it to be outside the shooting circle and disallowed the goal. From the hitout, Millfield scored immediately to put them 2-1 up at halftime. They went further ahead after the break and although Ashmoor recovered through another penalty corner from Crosby and kept the pressure on, it wasn’t quite enough to take the game. This is an amazing achievement yet again from the Ashmoor boys, they were the only club up against all the top private schools in the West and they rightly claimed their place in the National Finals.
Honiton Hornets 0 Ashmoor 13
Ashmoor finished their league matches before Christmas with another resounding win against Honiton 13 – 0. Honiton only managed to raise 10 players but made it difficult for Ashmoor in the first half by holding them to 2-0 with goals from Meg Pearson and Sue Hutchings. The 2nd half was a different affair all together, Pearson claimed her brace, Sue Hutchings her hatrick, Laura Glover scored 4, Nikki Hutchings got 2, Rachel Simmons grabbed 1 and Nicky Bruce in only a 2 minute spell up front out of defence got the final goal. Youngster Ollie Thompson made an impressive debut in defence.
Devon U14 Girls league
The Ashmoor U14 girls were in action at Ivybridge, and depite Plymouth Marjons failing to show for the opening game, they went on to beat Teignmouth 1-0 , Ollie Thompson grabbing the goal, and drawing 0-0 with both Dart and Ivybridge. The girls are starting to show lots of promise as all but 2 are young for the age group and this is their first experience of 11 a side natches.
